Ilex aquifolium is an evergreen shrub or tree from the family Aquifoliaceae - holly. It grows to 2 -10 m. It forms a pyramidal shrub or tree. The leaves are dark green, leathery and very shiny. It blooms from May to June with inconspicuous whitish flowers in the axils of leaves. Red inedible fruits later form on female plants.
Requirements: It grows best in a sunny to semi-shady habitat with moist permeable soil, well protected from freezing winds and harsh winter sun. The spring cut supports growth, and we use the summer cut for shaping. It is frost-resistant, but during periods of long-lasting severe frosts, young growths can freeze and therefore winter protection is suitable.
